Taboo | The Game of unSPEAKable Fun! |
This is a Bosco family favorite! Unlike the game--Catch a Phrase--there are many challenges to completing a simple task of "getting your team to say the Guess word at the top of the card." Can you get your teammates to say the word "birthday" and as many other words before the timer runs out? Sounds fairly easy until you hear the rules which restrict certain words you can say, hand motions, and noises or sound effects made. You also may NOT say any part of any word on the card (cannot say either birth or day e.g.). "But do sing if you feel the urge and do have fun!" The game can play to fill the time temporarily before another activity or entertain your family and/or friends for hours. The number of rounds is decided at the start of the game and the team with the most points WINS after the final round is over. Taboo has a variety of cards (162 cards to be exact), each card containing two Guess words (each of a different color) on both sides of the card making the game highly re-playable. In addition, it's portable since there are very few materials including squeaker with no battery requirement. Lastly, this version adds a game-changer die which mixes up the game before the timer starts each turn for those who have mastered the classic game of Taboo! |

BANG! | My Gateway Game Story |
After playing this card game tonight as the Renegade at a family gathering during the holidays, I recalled why I was and still am fond of this game. I love the theme, the game mechanics, but most of all I love playing as new characters each with their own special abilities with an assigned role giving them each their own purpose. For example, I could be El Gringo, the new Sheriff, who must bring justice by ridding his town of any and all Outlaws and Renegade(s)...or I could be Suzy Lafayette, the town Outlaw, seeking vengeance on the Sheriff with my fellow vigilantes. I did not grow up sheltered from playing childhood games like Cowboys and Indians. Instead, my parents embraced us playing as both the cowboys and the Indians. Bang! "recreates an old-fashioned spaghetti western shoot-out," in a way unique only to this game, where kids and adults both can play as allies or foes similar to Cowboys and Indians. More so, this game illustrates this theme through beautiful artwork and provides many translations in several countries (including the U.S.) since each playing card depicts iconography that is easy to learn and the game includes seven (7) reference cards showing what the symbols mean. This was my gateway game into other bluffing, deduction, and hand management games which trickles down to other games that I learned and love. Cowboys and Indians, I guess you could say, impacted me as a child and even still today playing games that share the same spark of imagination and role-playing that kids do so easily. |

Not as complicated as the rules make it to be, and it was very helpful to have already played New York 1901. |

Love Letter | Short & Sweet but Hours of Fun! |
Love Letter's theme of courtship goes hand-in-hand with your goal of getting "your love letter into Princess Annette's hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors." Due to the simplicity of Love Letter, I have spent significantly less time explaining the rules and in lieu have enjoyed it more than other games in my collection. This hidden-identity, micro game is a fun-filler and a great way to introduce games to friends and family that are beginners! |

Shipyard | Good but a little bit fiddly |
The setup for this game takes a long time due to the large variety in pieces. Play is a little more complex for two players than more due to the way tokens are moved on the board. Also, a two player game feels a little short/truncated due to alternate rules and fewer choices for actions. My recommendation to people playing this game would be to leave the equipment and crew markers in their respective bags until needed, taking dealing with arranging them on the game board out of the long list of things to set up. |

Favor of the Pharaoh | Demo on Demand |
Like my demo of Castle Assault last week, I'll be doing this demo-on-demand for anyone interested between the times listed. Just drop by my table and express your interest that you'd like to learn the game. It's a fast-paced game, usually lasting about 15 minutes per player. I think the demo-on-demand format will work well for this game because of it's brisk play time and because I'd like to accommodate the people playing in the Splendor tournament. No need to sign up ahead of time for this demo unless you'd like to reserve a specific time. |

Castle Assault | Demo on Demand |
I'm running this demonstration as a "demo on demand" with multiple demos one right after the other for anyone who wants to learn the game. This is a two-player game with games expected to last between half an hour and forty-five minutes or so, so I think this format will work well. With this is mind, there is no need to sign up ahead of time unless you'd like to reserve a specific time sometime in the afternoon. Otherwise, just drop by the demo table and sit down and play! |
